New Boat Loans

Buying a boat need not be too daunting. You can still have bit of luxury without necessarily having to go broke.

There are many lending institutions that are primarily focused on giving out boat loans. And they are your best bet among the many financial lenders. For one, they can give you sound advice on the tax implications of your purchase. They can tell you that you can register your boat as a home and, therefore, deduct some taxes for owning a boat. They can also assist you in processing the necessary documents to have you cruising as soon as possible. And, they can process your application fast. Some would take just a few hours to have a package ready for you.

When choosing a new boat loan, look past the interest rate figure. Most lenders will give you a choice of a fixed-interest rate for the duration of the term or a flexible rate. The experienced boat loan financiers can give you a fairly accurate projection of interest-rate fluctuations. But do remember that a fixed-rate loan, while it guarantees fixed charges for the entirety of the loan term, also carries a slightly higher rate. The flexible rate, because it factors in inflation risks, is a bit less expensive.

There are also lending facilities that offer flexible repayment plans. For example, you may require a seasonal payment schedule rather than the usual monthly payment schedule. This allows you to be free in particular months to devote your resources to other obligations. You may even opt for an annual payment schedule. Or, go to the extreme and pay as often as biweekly.

But before you start computing, budget first for other costs that come with taking a boat loan. You will have to pay for necessary processing fees: appraisals, underwriting, etc. that you have to go through before being approved for a loan, as well as other incidental costs.

Marketing Thru Referrals for Boat Cleaning Services

Cleaning and detailing boats is a very good business especially for the nautical type person who would rather spend their time at the marina that just about any other place. But how does one go about getting customers and marketing their services. Better yet how does on market thru referrals for their boat cleaning and detailing business?

Well, simple really. You see you need to get with the other business who operate the marinas and services business. For instance if you make a deal with a Marina operator they may allow you to put your business cards and flyers in the monthly slip fee statements. Be sure to give a discount to those at that Marina, this also makes the marina look good.

It is also advisable to be on a first name basis with all the Yacht Salesmen in the area, because everyone knows that clean boats sell good. Additionally you can increase referrals by giving discounts or add-on free services to your customers who refer you the most.

Another smart thing to do is to hire helpers who are in the Sea Cadets or Junior Coast Guard. You should also make little displays with flyers, which do not take up too much space and ask to put them on the counters of local Marina businesses. I hope you will consider all this in 2006.

Getting To Vietnam - Road, Rail, Boat, Air

Whether you’re in Australia, America or China, if you’re heading to Vietnam for a holiday, it’s now as easy as ever to arrive by road, rail or air. Here are your options:

ROAD

From Cambodia: There is a road crossing at Moc Bai (Tay Ninh province 80km from Saigon) connecting Phnom Penh in Cambodia with Saigon. Several companies now operate a direct bus service between the two cities, departing each city early morning.
There is also a crossing into Vietnam via Chau Doc (245 km from Saigon) that is passable boat. Boats leave Phnom Penh (daily) in the early afternoon arriving in Chau Doc (Vietnam) around 6pm. The return journey departs early the next morning. Buses connect Chau Doc to Ho Chi Minh City (7hrs)

From Laos: There is a road crossing at Lao Bao in Quang Tri Province, about 160km northwest of Hue, connecting Savannakhet with Central Vietnam. Another road into Vietnam is via Cau Treo, Ha Tinh Province. Numerous travel companies run bus services for travellers, times vary.
From China: There are 03 roads crossing at Ha Khau (Lao Cai Province), Dong Dang (Lang Son Province) and Mong Cai (Quang Ninh Province). These borders may close at time, with out warning.

BOAT

There are no normal sea crossings into Vietnam although an increasing number of cruise liners sail into Vietnamese waters. The only other international connection by boat is the Mekong River crossing from Phnom Penh to Chau Doc (see above).

TRAIN

There are international rail connections between China and Vietnam. One from Peking via Nanning, crossing at Lang Son and one from Kunming that travels via Lao Cai, both services terminate in Hanoi.

AIR

Vietnam currently has three international airports:

ท Noi Bai serving Hanoi and the north

ท Danang International Airport serving the central provinces

ท Tan Son Nhat in Ho Chi Minh City serving the south.

The national carrier, Vietnam Airlines, has services connecting the USA, UK, Australia, Europe and many Asian countries to Vietnam. An increasing number of international carriers also fly to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Low cost airline such as, Tiger Air and Air Asia, have flights from as low as $25USD/exl taxes from Bangkok/Singapore to Hanoi/HCMC.

When departing Vietnam, all visitors must pay $14USD for departure tax. This is payable at the airport, after check in.

NOTE: The above information can change at anytime, without warning. It is recommended that you seek up to date information regarding borders, travel, costs etc before you travel.

Boat Detailing Tips and Procedures

Auto detailers are often asked to clean boats and detail boat trailers. There is an easy and efficient way to do this with little effort. Washing and waxing boat trailers is an easy sale. Be sure to offer the boat owner a trailer wax. Let the owner know that a heavily waxed trailer is more rust resistant even when used in salt water. They can wax now or repaint later. To remove rust, brush on two coats of Ospho Acid, available in paint stores and marine supply shops. It will change the chemistry of rusting steel from an active to a passive state and stop rust cold.

Washing Fenders, Lines and Shore Power Cords

When washing lines most manufacturers recommend putting them in a net bag and throwing them in a washing machine. Although you cannot do this we recommend Gemtek Cleaner/Degreaser, which will not remove the finish on the lines. Washing fenders, same thing and afterwards wipe with a protective spray such as CRS or WD-40. Cleaning shore power cables is something not everyone does. It can leave a boat looking extra clean (the way a pair of clean and dressed wheels lights up a car) and really goes above and beyond the call of duty. You can charge $1.00 - $2.50 a foot for cleaning them. Most of the time they are greasy and grimy from docks and creosote tar. Make sure power is off and they are unplugged before attempting to clean. You don’t want shocking while you shine. Keep cords out of the water as much as possible. The way to really clean them fast is with acetone. Work one section at a time and slowly.

The acetone slightly melts and softens the cords outer shell so be careful not to over saturate the cord and towel. Change towels exposing a clean surface. This will make your work faster. Then dress them with a little 303 protectant or Armor-All. You can also use Starbrite’s Power Cord Cleaner as well as a protectant and acetone neutralizer. Stowed hoses can attract mold, mildew and grease from lack of use or due to climate and other conditions. Follow the same cleaning procedures for the shore power cables.

Environmentally Friendly Boating

As a boater, you want the waterways to stay clean. To make sure that your beautiful scenery will be around for your next trip out, here are a few tips that you can use.

1. Lead by example.

Next time you are at the marina, be sure to bend over and pick up a piece of litter out of the water (or from the beach, docks, or ground). If people see you taking the time and energy to clean up, they will know that it is not acceptable for them to litter.

2. Start a movement.

If everyone on your water picked up one item of garbage each time they went out, the water would be clean in no time. Put up signs suggesting the “pick up one piece” policy along the dock or at a relative area.

You can also organize to get a lot of people together to clean your lake or river. Like the “adopt-a-highway” program, getting everyone together once a year to clean your waterway will help you get your shores looking clean in no time.

3. Use Common Sense When Fueling.

If you have a portable fuel tank, be sure to always fill it on solid ground where spills are less likely to occur. In many areas it is illegal to fill a portable fuel tank in a boat for fire regulations. If your fuel tank is on-board, be careful while you fuel. Keeping a cloth or towel with you to wipe away spills will save the environment and your paint job!

Always know the capacity of your fuel tanks. Be sure that you have an accurate gauge to tell how full your tank is. Never overfill your tank.

If you have a smaller engine, use a funnel to fill your tank. You can even take an engine ashore to fill. This will give you an opportunity to wipe down the area of your boat where the engine attaches, and can prevent you from getting rust and other problems. This particularly applies to emergency engines for sailboats.

4. Know your Vent Line.

When fuel gets warmer, it expands. This can cause it to escape from the vent line. Riding through particularly choppy or rough waters can also cause fuel to escape from the vent line. You can install an anti-surge valve to prevent fuel from leaking overboard while you are having a good time.

When you are filling your tank, you will be able to feel air flow from your vent line. This air flow will increase dramatically when you are close to filling your tank. When you feel the air flow increase, it means that it is time to stop filling your tank.

There is no excuse for littering, especially on the water. The litter that you throw into the water can contaminate fish, the water that goes to our cities, and surrounding farmlands. The smallest items, such as cigarette butts, often take the longest to decompose (cigarette butts are NOT decomposable and will stay in the water, keeping it ugly, until they wash ashore where children might play).

As a boater, I have an intense respect for nature. I like going out into nature, and I have a vested interest in keeping our environment clean. Together, we will be able to keep our waterways clean.

Offshore Asset Protection…Two Men In a Boat

Anson and Quigley were close friends.

They were joint owners in a small company that ran a sight seeing boat doing harbour tours in a city popular with tourists.

The business had been growing nicely from its fitful start some nine years ago. In fact they had sold the initial boat and upgraded to a character wood vessel that was much admired by their many clients as it plied the waters of this lovely harbour city, stopping here and there to point out and admire the local architecture or attraction.

The boat was very expensive and they and their wives had gone on the hook to the bank to finance it but they were confident it would pay off very well.

Even though Anson and Quigley were close friends, they did not share common views on personal finances.

Anson was by far the more cautious but when he broached the subject of protection from any potential catastrophic event, Quigley would shrug off any of Anson’s suggestions and say that he was quite content with the coverage of their insurance package and change the subject.

Anson would drop the subject but set his own plans in motion.

Murphy was aboard their boat one day and of course that was the day that if anything could go wrong, it went wrong huge!

An elderly passenger had come aboard and was enjoying the day when, on disembarking, he caught his shoe on a gangway cleat and pitched himself clean over the side guard chain and into the water between the boat and the dock. On the way down he hit his head on a piling.

They rescued the passenger promptly but sadly the hit on the head proved damaging to the extent that the poor old gentlemen suffered brain damage and was confined to a wheel chair.

You would be right in expecting that the elderly gentleman and his goading and expectant relatives would drop the writ promptly and they did.

The long and the short of it was that the settlement exceeded their insurance by a very large amount.

When the prosecuting attorneys did their examination for discovery to expose the partners assets outside the business they found that Quigley had a fully paid for house, a sizeable investment portfolio, a piece of investment property, a large motor home, an antique car and a stamp collection which over the years had become Quigley’s pride and joy and was now worth a tidy sum.

They took it all. Even the stamp collection.

When they looked into Anson’s affairs they found that his house was mortgaged to the hilt. The second mortgage was held by a company domiciled in Panama and duly registered in all the right places.

Anson had been making payment as required.

He had a few thousand in his checking account, a used car and that was pretty well it.

There was nothing more to see or attach—so they gave up on trying getting anything more out of Anson.

The old gentleman’s fall had cost both partners equally in business assets but when it came to the private stuff, Quigley was wiped out and Anson survived almost unscathed.

When it was all over, Quigley asked his friend just what he had squirreled away, where and how.

Anson reminded Quigley of how often he had tried to steer him the right way and how Quigley had ignored him.

They are still friends but probably won’t go into business together again and every now and then they meet at the local pub and hoist one together and Quigley looks at his friend--- and wonders.

Epilogue:

Anson had enlisted the aid of an accountant he knew of who specialised in offshore financial planning.

No one knows for sure whether he owns that ranch that he visits often in Mexico, or that investment portfolio in the Turks and Caicos or that hefty bank balance in a well known Swiss bank.

No one knows for sure because nothing is registered in his own name.

Question:

Which one are you?

Anson or Quigley?

Lugano A Piece of Italian Heaven in Switzerland

Switzerland is a multi-language country. While we were there, we found French to be the main language in Geneva and Neuchatel. Later, we encountered German as the most used language; however, in the south, some very warm-blooded Italians surprised us by talking in Italian inside the pleasant coolness of the Swiss canton Ticino situated at the Italian border.

We first witnessed Lugano in Ticino from Monte Lema, a southern Alp with a modern cable lift. You didn’t think I would hike up there, did you?

Sitting inside a cable lift is almost like flying, although I am not into flying unless inside an airplane. I am not into paragliding either. Yet, we enjoyed the sight of numerous paragliders in most places over the Alps especially around Ticino

Monte Lema has the most splendid view of Lake Lugano, Lake Maggiore, and southern Ticino. The terraced restaurant on Monte Lema, which was like a self-service take-out, offered us a variety of simple lunches. The terrace had a wood planked deck-like floor and long picnic tables with benches where we perched to eat our lunch, watching the magnificence of the view with mountains, lakes, and in the distance, cities glowing in glorious colors.

While admiring Lake Lugano from the top of Monte Lema, we met a couple from New Jersey who told us that they went on a magnificent day cruise on the lake. Anyway, if there is water with a sightseeing cruise on it, be it a lake, river, or an arm of the ocean, something forces me to it. My husband has lasting memories of a few hilarious and difficult boat and water related adventures I pushed him into, but our boat trip on Lake Lugano was pleasant and calm.

Cruises sailed off almost every hour or several times during the day. At about lunchtime one day, we boarded a white and turquoise boat with "Navigazione Lugano" written on the side of it.

On the boat, we went up to the top deck, and as we sailed, the cool lake breeze, the beautiful dark blue lake surrounded by lush, green covered Alps that looked like moss hills, and the lakeside towns and villages boasting of colorful flowery patches made us forget about the lunch served on board. Such extravagant richness of nature and beauty of the sights humbles a person and makes him think how lucky he is to be there to witness it all.

Alps around Lugano, though quite high, seem more rounded at the peaks than those in mid to northern Europe, as were the people who seemed to be smoother, friendlier, and more open in their ways, for Lugano offered us the warmest human contact. "Benvenuti, benvenuti!" Everywhere we went, we were welcomed with open arms.

In Europe, one thing different from the US is that Europeans do not drink tap water, except maybe in a couple of places in France. If one asks for water, one has to be ready to pay for it. Also, each locality has a special way and means of imbibing its favorite drinks. In Lugano, they drink wine from small bowls called boccalinos and their after dinner drink is a walnut liqeur Ratafia.

The food, too, tasted excellent, but that may be because I am partial to Italian cooking. In the northern Swiss cities, the food is delicious in a local sense, but extremely pricey, especially if one ate all his meals in a restaurant.

English is rarely spoken in Lugano, and if spoken, it is very difficult to understand. Something similar happens with my Italian. I can somewhat understand Italian if I force myself, but if I try to talk it, what comes out of my mouth is a distorted Spanish. Despite the language barrier, I met the nicest, warmest people in Lugano and if I dare study Italian again, it will be because of the people of Lugano and my wish to visit this fantastic town and to hear, one more time, a sweet-voiced tenor's singing just for me.

Lugano is a great city for walking tours, for there are many things to see and experience. Besides the Via Nassa and the Swiss Banks, there are the lakeside promenade, narrow streets of the old town, St. Mary’s Church, parks, flowers, the sweet smells of oleander, lemon, and magnolia, museums, outdoor cafes, lake breezes, and the strong cappucino that is served at almost any place, and of course, that divine food: polenta, ossobucco, pastas galore and my favorite crusty bread and formaggini, which is goat cheese topped with olive oil and coarse pepper. I can safely say that the best food I ever ate was the Italian food in Lugano.

Shopping in Lugano is an adventure. Unless you’ve hit the lotto, it is better to stay away from shopping on the cobbled Via Nassa. Rolex, Gucci, Versace, and many other too hot to touch stores are on this pedestrian-only street where it is great to walk up and down if only to dream Cinderella dreams.

Several years have passed since I’ve been to Lugano but the memory stands shadowless, still delicately injecting its splendor into my life, making me hope--in my next vacation--to visit Lugano again.

Pontoon Boat Covers

Own a boat and a vista of immense opportunities for recreation opens. The options are many. Come the much awaited weekend and you can leave behind the madding crowd and commune with the serenity of the waters or if it is spending time with your family that is the perfect idea of happiness, then take your boat, sail in the water, try fishing and then enjoy the meal at the lighted camp fire. Such is the utility of your boat and it makes sense to keep it well maintained.

This may involve many features, but one of the most important is covering the boat with a cover. When going cover hunting, do consider the pontoon boat cover as a feasible option. As the name itself suggests, the cover is best meant for the pontoon boats. Pontoon boat covers offer the choice between trailer able boat covers and non-trailer able boat covers. The advantage associated with the non-trailer able is its full cut size. This not only allows extra room for rails, but also provides protection from water, light etc.

Now trailer able boat covers are generally meant for boats when they are kept stationary. This means the boats are in a way parked under the cover and are protected from the weathering and corrosive aspects of nature. The fabric for non-trailer able boat covers is usually rugged polyester or sturdy canvas. The strength and flexibility of these materials give the covers a longer life and a decent protection to your boat.

Trailer able pontoon boats covers come in handy when you are pulling the boat with a trailer. These covers are designed with a quick release buckle and strap system for uniform fitting. The covers usually have dual air vents to reduce moisture and bloating of the cover in case of high winds. Both trailer able and non-trailer able covers can provide the ideal coverings for your pontoon boat and you can choose between the two depending upon whether your boat is camped or in use.

Online Boat Loans

Buying a boat is a major financial decision. Even if you have enough money to purchase one in cash, it would not be a sound move. There is no telling where else you may need to use that cash. A wiser move is to put that money in the bank and apply for a boat loan instead. While your money earns interests, you are already enjoying your boat and paying only the minimum amount due per month.

Getting a loan has been made fast and easy. Several lenders or financial agencies have sites on the Internet. They can process your request for application in as fast as a week. And, they are flexible in terms of repayment schedules. Repayment terms for boat loans may be set from five years to as long as twenty years, depending on how expensive your boat is. They may also help design a convenient repayment schedule. You may be given the option to get either a fixed interest rate for the duration of the term or stake a risk and go for an adjustable interest rate.

As it is with lending institutions, these lenders charge a boat-loan-processing fee. The amount varies, but the standard practice is to charge percentage of your loan amount. Most will also require a down payment that would range from ten to twenty percent of the cost of the boat. Others may only require about five percent or lesser amount as down payment. You may also have to allocate an amount for a boat surveyor. Banks and even some of these online lenders will require an appraisal of the boat first. They may also want you to pay any liens put against the boat, such as unpaid docking fees.

Always consider many different financial institutions first. Then, create a short list of those that can offer you more flexibility. This way, you can get the best package and repayment schedule.

Los Angeles Clippers Success Boats Tend to Sink

The Lakers started off 3-1, so they must be a playoff team. As of today they're 4-6, and their postseason chances are dubious to say the least. Keep that in mind when thinking about the seemingly playoff-bound LA Clippers. Now, you're going to see a lot of people on TV try to rectify their "mistake" of miscalculating the Clippers by saying they are indeed as good as their record portrays. Do not listen to them, time will change and soon so will their opinions.

First, the combined 10 records of the 10 teams they've played against are 41-54. When San Antonio and Dallas come a knocking, we'll see how the Clippers fare. 2 games vs. the Hawks, a match-up with the Lakers; tougher opponents than that are coming.

A team blowing their record completely isn't unheard of in the NBA. In fact, it's happened as recently as the 01-02 season with the Milwaukee Bucks. Through 39 games, the Bucks were 26-13, ฝ game back of the New Jersey Nets. The Detroit Pistons were an unimpressive 19-20 at that point. Then, the Bucks blew it. They finished 15-28, somehow allowing both Indiana and Toronto to both squeeze in the playoffs while missing it altogether themselves. Detroit finished a Nuggets-like 31-12, just 2 games behind New Jersey when it was all over. The Bucks finished 6-16 to cap of the 01-02 year.

The moral of that story was that things change in the NBA, and nobody is accurate predicting things that haven't happened. The 21st century has already served LA Clipper chokes to us. In that familiar 01-02 season the Clipps were 36-33, right in the middle of the playoff race. They finished 3-10. How about last year- when they were 23-23 only to lose their next 8 games.

There's a reason they've only made the playoffs 3 times in their 26+ years of existence: They are the Clippers! This team has a legacy of losing and choking. For all I know this team could make the playoffs, but rest assured only as high as the 8th seed. The day the Clippers deserve and get the benefit of the doubt is the day the Natalie Holloway story isn't on Live and Direct with Rita Cosby. It ain't happening.

8 Reasons Why You Should Choose Inflatable Boats!

When speak about the advantages of inflatable boats, it just can’t be finished within 10 pages. Believe me, inflatable boats just have their unique advantages over those traditional boats. I have shortened and categorized the advantages of inflatable boats into 8 categories, which are:

Advantage No.1: Flexible

As known, the very first advantage of inflatable boats is their flexibility. What I mean here is inflatable boats could be deflated and kept in your private car boot. You can bring inflatable boats with you wherever you go. They just do not need boat trailers or huge truck to be transported.

Besides transportation issue, the convenience of inflatable boats brings no headache to storage issue as well. After being deflated and folded nicely, inflatable boats just size like a stack of clothes.

Whenever you need inflatable boats, you can just take out straight from your car boot. Inflating them with a foot pump just take around 30 minutes (maximum) and if you are using an electric pump, 15 minutes (maximum) is what you need to enjoy boating.

Advantage No.2: Stable

Inflatable boats are built with 2 large buoyancy tubes on the side and a flat floor in between of them. The large size buoyancy tubes provide a low center of gravity for the boats as well. These designs make inflatable boats sit flat on the water surface, making inflatable boats almost impossible to flip over.

For example, 435ps paddle ski from sea eagle give ultimate stability. Comparing with normal paddle canoe, it is mush more stable due to the two separate buoyancy tubes on two different sides. The features of inflatable boats just best suit those who like to stand up fishing and those scuba divers who need to flip backward to the water, as well as pulling up themselves from water.

Advantage No.3: Large Loading Capacity

Due to the designs of large buoyancy tubes, the loading of inflatable boats could be huge. Together with the stable attribution, inflatable boats just could upload a large loading of cargo or person without any unsteadiness.

For example, Sea Eagle 12.6 SR, a runabout boat with exterior dimension 12’6” x 5’4” just can be loaded with as much as 6 adults or 1600lbs. Inflatable boats just give a higher loading capacity.

Advantage No.4: Inflatable Boats Light As Air

Although the loading capacity of inflatable boats is huge, that doesn’t mean inflatable boats are heavy. The fabrics that produce inflatable boats are very light in weight.

For Sea Eagle inflatable dinghy, SE 9, it is only weight 38lbs for the boat and 74lbs for boat, floorboard and motor mount(For your info, SE 9 could be loaded with 1200lbs or 5 adults).Using the comparison of as light as air in inflatable boats is no over-exaggerated.

The light weight of inflatable boats makes inflatable boats launch easier. Only 2 adults are needed to carry out the inflatable boat from water after using. The light weight of inflatable boats just makes people love inflatable boats more.

Advantage No.5: All-In-One Function

Inflatable boats are designed for all-in-one purpose. No matter you want to rapid, paddle, sail, row, or even cruise, inflatable boats just can transform into the boat you want.

You might just be inspired by Sea Eagle explorer 380x kayak, which can cut through those rough, class 4 white water. Sail cat 15sc which looks like an inflatable sailing raft just provide you the ultimate all-in-one function. Combining with an electrical trolling motor, an evening cruise just await you outside.

Advantage No.6: Strong And Durable

Many years of enjoyment is what inflatable boats meant to be as an inflatable boat is ready only after a serial of experiments and trials. Inflatable boats could not be pushed to the market without gone through many quality controls.

With those quality controls and the fine materials, inflatable boats are strong and durable. Building with 1000 Denier Reinforced material, Sea Eagle inflatable boats are simply the best. The plastic coated transom in Sea Eagle inflatable boats keeps the transom secure from the damaging effect of water seepage.

Advantage No.7: Economical Boats

Inflatable boats are economical boats. Aside from the lower price of the boat itself, the maintenance fee of inflatable boats is equally low.

Example gas-consuming, as inflatable boats are very light in weight, less power is needed to move the boats. Less power means less gas consuming. Besides, the resale of inflatable boats is easy and with good residual prices as well.

Advantage No.8: 3-Year Warranty And 30 Days On-Water-Trial

On top of these advantages, Sea Eagle just offers 3 years warranty and 30 days on-water-trial for all Sea Eagle inflatable boats.

You can get a full product refund if you are unsatisfied in any way within 30 days from the date of delivery. Use sea eagle inflatable boats on water and ask for refund if you are not satisfied. Besides, 3 year warranty just allows you to send back your inflatable boats for free repair or no-charge replacement. It is indeed secure with sea eagle inflatable boats.

There are actually a lot more advantages of inflatable boats, but I think it’s time for you to find out yourself. Until then it’s your turn to talk about your inflatable boats. :)

Affordable Minnesota Lakeshore

Dreaming of a lake home? The Land of 10,000 Lakes translates into millions of feet of shoreline in the state of Minnesota. But often it seems as only the very wealthy can live on the water’s edge. Is that an accurate perception? Stop dreaming and consider a few options that will make paradise more affordable.

Channel Shore

Shoreline along a channel is a great option for a full recreational lake. Many large lakes will have channels or narrow extensions that lead to other lakes or ponds. Usually there is not a place for a beach but you can have a slip or short dock for your boat. The channel will provide access to the main lake. The view will probably include homes on the opposite shore of the channel but if your goal is affordable use of a full recreational lake, this is a great alternative.

Smaller Lake with Channel to Full Recreational Lake

Often the lakes in Minnesota are connected to one or several smaller lakes. This can be a great opportunity. Shoreline that is shallow or weedy is not considered prime but if it has access to a larger lake, it could provide the same enjoyment at a much lower price.

Small Acreage Lake

Smaller lakes can be of interest to the more laidback water lover. Often there will be restrictions disallowing motors or only small motors. These smaller lakes can still be great for fishing, canoeing, kayaking and swimming. Some will allow docks and beaches but check with the DNR for specific restrictions. A small lake will still offer wonderful natural views at a significantly lower price than a full recreational lake.

Environmental Lakes and Wetlands

Very shallow lakes wonderful for privacy but not great for recreation. If you are looking for a home with awesome views of wildlife, this may be something to consider.

Deeded Access

Many homes and associations near a full recreational lake have been developed with deeded access providing use of the lake. The ability to have a dock, use the beach, or moor a boat, will be outlined in a legal agreement specifying what uses are allowed. Not all deeded access is created equal! Request a copy of all of the specific uses and rules before writing an offer so you can fully understand the access available as a home owner.

Lake View

A home with a beautiful lake view but no shoreline or lake access, can provide the wonderful picturesque views everyone dreams of without the high lakeshore taxes.

Location with Public Access Nearby

A final option is to look for a home that is near park with public lake access. I sold one such home where the public access to a good-sized full recreational lake was about a quarter mile down the street. This family uses the lake to canoe, cross country ski and fish without driving or trailers. There was none of the additional cost or taxes associated with lakeshore property but all of the benefits!

Crossing the Pacific in a Row Boat

Can you imagine crossing the Pacific Ocean in a rowboat? How would you do it? Where would you start, where would you try to finish? How long do you think it would take? What kind of boat would you use, what type of oars? Can you just imagine yourself trying something that daring? Well one man not only imagined it, he did it.

He was a Frenchman named Coindre, is very much an adventuring soul indeed. Not only has he crossed the Pacific Ocean by rowboat, but he crossed the Atlantic Ocean four times. And he set the World Record of 129 days, which is impressive, but since no one has ever done it in modern history he holds the record? Can you imagine rowing for that many hours a day; he must be in Olympic Athletic Shape?

Do you think you could do it? I was considering this and I think I could do it and I would just to prove I could not for notoriety or to attempt to beat his record but rather to prove it to myself? Would you do it if you had the time? Talk about a great weight loss program and just think of the six pack in your stomach when you were done? Wow, you would be totally ripped, besides what a great work out?

One person I talked to said for them; “It would become like a Zen experience or flow where one becomes one with the boat and the movement. If that mental state could be held for the entire rowing period or the majority of it, it would probably be some type of record for that activity.”

Yes, indeed it would, wouldn’t it? But would you do it? Sounds like a once in a lifetime crazy thing, but I think I would like to do that very much actually. What supplies would you take? You would have to take supplies and water and food. Enough for almost a year, as you could not do it in the 129 days that gentleman did. Could you muster the strength of mind? I think I could; No problem, it is mind and will of the individual, strength of character. I could do it. Could you? Do you have that level of perseverance? Can you say that there is no doubt you could do it? Would you be willing to commit and do it?

What about high seas and weather? A year is a long time and you are bound to hit a least a few huge storms. What kind of boat would you design for such a trip? What if a real big storm came along could you turn your boat into an air-tight cocoon and simply bob up and down until it passed and then start rowing again in a couple of days? Would you survive being banged around that much? It is not like you could swim to shore? Look at a Globe do you see how big the Pacific Ocean is?

The Frenchman did it and finished near Charleston, Oregon he was headed for San Francisco, but that is not so bad consider the distance across the Pacific Ocean is it? He was in great shape before he started, what kind of shape are you in? A person attempting such must be in excellent shape to be able to handle it. If you were in good shape to start, but did not have a life-time history of rowing could you started cold turkey you would be tone when you were done; the ultimate weight loss program and body toning, would you say; “Hell just do it?” Do you have the heart and will to do something like that?

I know I always wanted to run across the United States and now that I have a really good feeling for how far that is having traveled it so many times by motor home coach. I know I could do it in 30-50 mile per day runs and walking; I will do that some day, it is something I would really like to do. But rowing across the Pacific Ocean, wow, that takes all the human will of a hundred people that would certainly be something. Could you do it? Would you? Think on this and live strong.

Find and Catch Those Pesky Fish with a Garmin 240 Fish Finder

Garmin 240 Fish Finder Depthfinder with Transducer - a review

The lakes that I normally fish are deep and quite rocky, and I have been delighted with the performance of the Garmin 240 Fish Finder, which gives a clear picture of what lies below. The image of the bottom shows great detail, and if it is showing fish presence then you can guarantee they will be there. It does a good job of indicating non-fishlines as well. It is at its best when performing in deep water, but perhaps isn't as impressive in shallow water.

The Depth Control feature works well in continuing to monitor changes in water depth automatically while the Whiteline feature determins bottom hardness well. The screen is easy to read, even in the dark when the backlight comes into its own. You can see the controls easily.

The Garmin 240 Fish Finder is packed full of features for less money than my old Lowrance, while the features are easily compatible."

Features

The 240-by-240 pixel high-definition display gives you a clear picture of fish, thermoclines, structure and bottom surface. By using various shades of gray, the Fishfinder 240 paints a beautiful picture, leaving little to interpretation.

Operational features include a unique control bar that identifies the most commonly used fishing settings. So without hunting through complicated menus, you can quickly configure and save the settings you want. As lake conditions change, you can fine- tune your Fishfinder 240 on the fly.

Garmin's engineering edge includes See-ThruTM technology, a Garmin exclusive. This allows the Garmin 240 Fish Finder to hear both weak and strong signals simultaneously so you to identify fish returns under the toughest conditions: suspended in thermoclines or even hiding near structure.

Another exclusive feature is Depth Controlled Gain (DCGTM), which automatically adjusts fishfinder sensitivity according to depth, not echo intensity like other fishfinders. The result is a much more detailed and accurate picture of bottom structure.

And we've often heard stories about folks who have found a great fishing spot one day, only to be unable to find it again the next day. With the Garmin 240 Fish Finder that's never a problem again.

Boat Trailers For Sale Finding a Good Deal

If you are looking for a boat trailer for sale, you should not have any problem finding the one that you need. There are places all over that will sell boat trailers, and you might even find that if you go and buy a new boat, that many places will even give yo a deal if you buy a trailer at the same time. This is a great way to get the boat and trailer that you want for a good price that you can afford as well.

You will find that boat stores and dealers will have boat trailers for sale as well. When you go to buy and look at boat trailers, you should know the size of your boat that you will be hauling on the trailer. This will ensure that you are looking at the right trailers for your boat, and that your boat will fit on the trailer you are considering. You will also know what length trailer you should be considering as well for the best fit for your boat.

Boat trailers for sale can be found in the news paper classifieds section as well. You will see that many people will have boats and trailers for sale and many will also have some for sale that are separate. Calling around to the people that have placed ads and making appointments to see the trailers is a great way to find one that you are looking for, and you will see that you might even find one that you want to buy as well.

While you are looking at boat trailers for sale, make sure that you do not get one that has rust spots and holes. A trailer that has started rusting will not last as long as you might need it to, and you will find yourself having to replace it before long. Be sure that the hitch is tight for the best hauling as well. You will not want your trailer to bounce up and down as you are driving down the road, and making sure the fit is tight will be the best bet to prevent this from happening.

Boating for the Late Bloomer

When it comes to introducing yourself to the water, canoes are great place to start! Some people prefer to start out with inflatable boats or even kayaks. Most people start their boating adventures when they're young, at a summer camp or fishing with their dad. They are versatile and practical for a number of reasons, and can work in a number of different situations. Canoes are designed for ease of getting in and out, especially for older folks wishing to get into the sport. For the younger paddlers, this may not be as important. Another thing that makes canoes very popular over kayaks is their storage capacity. If you're planning on buying one, you can use it on a camping trip and numerous other types of adventures. Because the canoe is available in an array of sizes, some people even prefer this to an inflatable dinghy.

The longer canoes are excellent for long open water trips, but you can also buy one-person smaller canoes for running white water. Canoes can sometimes be difficult to transport, unless you have a full-sized pickup truck and especially if you plan on loading it yourself. For this reason, some people choose inflatable kayaks instead. The storage capacity in the longer canoe is wonderful and can hold most items you will need for your adventure trip.

If you don't own a pickup, you may need to purchase a trailer to tow your boat. One benefit that kayaks have over canoes is their portability. Inflatable kayaks are becoming more and more popular for this main reason. Another drawback with canoes is that when it rains heavily, the boat can fill up rapidly with water. Fortunately, a canoe is very difficult to sink, but it will certainly make your trip annoying if it rains a lot. Also with a canoe, you may find that steering and maneuvering it can be difficult at times when a strong wind catches it.

No Boat Join Your Local Bass Club

Having been an avid basser for years, and not having the wherewithal to purchase a boat, I've often felt cheated and frustrated about not being able to get out to deeper waters (where I was certain the real bass were). Having succumbed to this delimma for some 40 years or more, I finally had something come my way that I never knew existed: my local bass fishing club.

I mean, I knew bass clubs existed, but I didn't know they were for me. For one thing, how can you join a bass fishing club if you don't have a boat. Additionally, isn't it just the best bass fishermen that are in these clubs? These guys do tournaments and such. Not sure if I could measure up.

Low and behold, the old saying "you won't know if you don't go" proved itself once again. Thanks to an Internet buddy, I was enlightened. I got the address and went to my first bass club meeting. It was simple, friendly, fun and I was fishing with them that weekend.

First off, let's address the notion that you have to be a great bass fisherman to belong to one of these clubs. This is not true. In fact, most of these anglers are people just like me, only with a little more experience (remember, I didn't have a boat - I was bank fishing). Most of these people are happy to share that experience with you.

Secondly, you do not have to have a boat. In fact, most clubs are looking for non-boaters to help share the expense of the trip with someone who owns a boat. Brilliant!

That really surprised me. Why didn't I know this years ago? It makes perfect sense, yet somehow this information escaped me.

Owning your own boat can be expensive. A decent boat purchased new can easily run you around $15,000. Ouch. Then there is the issue of storage, insurance, fuel, the trailer, something to pull it with, maintenance and a whole slew of other expenses that come with the package.

But not for the non-boater. I paid my bass club dues (very affordable) and within 2 days I was out with the gang on my first local bass club fishing tournament - in a boat. My share of the costs was extremely reasonable compared to those in the last paragraph. It was a 3 day trip and we even shared the cost of a room.

Don't ask how the fishing was; that's a whole other article.

In this club, we go out once a month to a different lake and have our own little bass tournament. Each time we go out, the non-boaters are matched up with a boater (also a different one each time). This way, you get to learn a little something from everyone.

So, if you are bank bound like I was, and want to head out for more exciting fishing, go online or open up the phone book and contact you local bass fishing club. You could be out on the boat in no time. Whether or not you catch any fish remains to be seen.

If You Want Healing Step Out of the Boat

Did you happen to see the made-for-tv movie, "Jesus," that first aired in 2000? I especially was moved by the scene of Peter stepping out of the boat to walk on the water to Jesus.

It was during a storm in the dark of night. The wind was blowing and the waves were high. Even though it was all Hollywood trickery, I watched spellbound as the Lord told Peter to come to Him.

Poor Peter. Who of us could not sympathize with his desire and faith. He made a good start of it, stepping out of the boat.

As long as Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, his faith held him up. But Peter's faith faltered. He began to notice the waves (the world) and started sinking into the sea.

Reaching out to save Peter (and his faith), Jesus rebuked him saying, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

We echo back, “Ahh, yes, Peter, why did you doubt?”

But Jesus is asking us, “Why do we doubt?”

What is keeping us in the boat when it comes to believing in Jesus to heal our body of sickness and disease? We know what it means to “man the oars,” but to step out of the boat in faith that Jesus will heal us is another matter altogether!

God's Victory Through Jesus Christ:

Throughout His ministry, Jesus did two things. He preached about the kingdom of God and healed people of physical suffering (Matthew 9:35} over and over again. He never relented, because Satan is found in every spiritual and physical sickness.

What good is it to preach about goodness if that goodness is incapable of overcoming the power behind both sin and suffering? The message and mission of Christ was twofold: repentance and healing.

"Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows...he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities...and by his wounds we are healed" {Isaiah 53:4-5} The question is are we willing to step out of the boat on that truth?

Friend, if Jesus were here today looking you straight in the eye, can you imagine Him NOT healing you of whatever sickness or disease you may have? He would call you by name, tell you God's kingdom is near to you, and ask you if you want to be healed. “Do you want to be healed?”

"Oh yes, yes, Lord. Heal me!” We wouldn't think twice about our cancer, our AIDS, or our Leukemia, would we?

"Heal me, Lord," we would cry. What a powerful testimony we would become for the Lord.

Now ask yourself, is your faith any different, any less, because Jesus is physically out of sight behind heaven's door? Unfortunately, for many of our brethren, the answer to that question is, “Yes, it is.”

God's Adversary:

The greatest hindrance to the advance of Christianity in the world is not lack of money or people. The greatest hindrance is the whisper of Satan in our heads telling us God no longer heals the way we read about in the Bible.

We have taken the everyday nuts and bolts of our faith and intellectualized it. For many who wear the name of Christ, their faith in God is no more secure than the boat that held the disciples up from sinking.

Sure, Christians trust God with their souls. That is easy! But holding up their faith for healing? Well, that is another matter altogether.

Never mind that God says He is our Healer. “I have cancer. I have diabetes. I have leukemia. These are incurable diseases,” we reason. The voice of Satan fills our head. The father of lies, the evil one, gives us all sorts of reasons to doubt God and keeps us in bondage by our own words.

Like Peter, who took his eyes off Jesus, we've taken our eyes off God's promise to heal. We focus our attention on the waves (our problems) instead of God's promise.

We want healing but are confused and afraid. We are afraid that God heals, and afraid that He will not heal, both at the same time. The end result is that many of us have forsaken God as our Healer—cancelled Him out as Yehovah-rapha.

Early Christians witnessed the power of Jesus’ preaching and healing. As a consequence, they never separated physical sickness from spiritual sickness. They recognized that God
places great worth on our body and heals us body and soul. The thought of saving someone's soul without addressing his physical need never entered their minds. Today, we are just the opposite.

In many churches today sickness is viewed as a matter for the world, and salvation as a matter for the Church. Many Christians no longer bother to consult with God about their maladies; they simply go to the nearest medical doctor.

If You Want Healing Step Out of the Boat:

Isaiah 53:4-5 is not intended to diminish science or modern medicine. But, Friend, God does not require science or medicine to heal. All He needs is your permission and faith. Beyond that, He calls “things that are not as though they were” (Romans 4:17).

God in Jesus Christ alone is the source of salvation. He alone is the source of healing. Can we come to grips with this eternal truth?

This is the place where “the rubber meets the road” of our faith and the reason why so few churches serve as healing centers today. Like the rest of the disciples, we want to profess our faith but prefer doing so from the safety and comfort of our boat. Humanity seems to work that way, and we can be sure Satan knows this as well.

Do you want healing? It makes no difference to our heavenly Father what ails you, life-threatening or not. If you want healing, you must step out of the boat. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, and Him crucified for our sins and infirmities.

Boat Dock Bluegills

There are times when the fishing is slow especially during the dog days of
summer. Lucky for us who try our luck every chance we get, even at 103 degrees,
there is the Bluegill. I can remember as a kid running up and down the dock where
my Grandfather resided on his houseboat on Percy Priest Lake in Tennessee. My
target was the hundreds of Bluegills readily visible suspended in the shade of the
dock and the boats tied up to them. Another attractant around boat docks are the
many brush piles created by used up Christmas trees and other brush often times
set there by the boat owners who create themselves a great place to fish when the
weather is a bit rough or rainy.

My memories of those days come into play many times throughout the year as
I search for a boat dock when the fishing is less than good on the main lake. Again
the target is Bluegills and it seems as though there are always a few that are ready
and willing to step in and turn an otherwise mundane scorcher into loads of fun that
at times lets you forget the heat or the reluctance of the other fish to bite.

My favorite technique is using a bobber and a cricket or worm. Sometimes the
Gills are lying up against the pillars and the sides of the boats. I tend to move in
close to the outside of the dock and pitch my presentation up into the shadiest part
of the slip. Between the boat and the dock is a great place but my favorite is the
empty slip with a boat on either side of that slip which creates a dark shady hole for
the Bluegills to hide. I have found that these open slips give the angler many more
feet of fishable dock and less chance of hanging a tie up rope on one of the boats
which usually means physically unhooking your rig from the rope and possibly
running the Gills out of that slip for several minutes.

You can catch several Bluegills from the same slip but after two or three you
will find that the bite has slowed. Move on to the next slip and rest that one as the
commotion of catching those fish will tend to send the remaining fish scampering
for more relaxing domains. Remember to return to that spot later as there was a
reason that the fish were there and they will be back. You can conceivably fish a
relatively small dock all day with great success and fun.

Bass love to hang around the docks too so don’t be surprised if upon setting
the hook you find yourself battling a huge Largemouth or better yet One of those
huge Largemouth bass engulf your cute little Bluegill as you play it to the boat.
Many bass cruise these docks for the cover as well as the food and a big bass will
find a struggling Bluegill hard to resist. The excitement that is sure to ensue is
unfortunately short lived more times than not as you are not A). Prepared as far as
equipment goes and B). More importantly you are not prepared mentally after
playing Bluegills all day to suddenly being attacked by some monster from the
shadows. If this hasn’t happened to you yet just keep chasing those Bluegill around
the docks and someday it will and when it does don’t be surprised if you are tying
up the old bass rod with a little bigger hook and a little bigger bobber and well you
get the idea but that will be for another article.

The next time you find yourself on the lake and find that the bite is slow take a
cruise to your favorite dock or pull out the map if you are on an unfamiliar lake and
locate a marina. You can also search for a road near the lake, which oftentimes will
lead you to some private docks that could produce. One other thing before I end
this article. I mentioned that my favorite technique is to use a worm or cricket with a
bobber. If you want to seriously target some monster Gills try removing the bobber
and maybe replacing the worm or cricket with a fat minnow. A Rooster Tail also
tends to bring on the big boys; however, a word of caution. When fishing docks
without a bobber, be prepared for many hang-ups. Vertical fishing is the best way
to combat this problem but often times it can spook some fish. Give it a try but if it
doesn’t work you will have to back off and toss your presentation up alongside the
structures and allow the bait to slowly fall. This is a great way to catch fillet size
Bluegills and as my Momma says the best tasting fish on earth.

Load The Boat

Jim Cramer has become quite a phenomenon lately with his show Mad Money. The point being that whether you like the show or you hate it, after these months of airing, something very apparent blares at you. When he hypes a stock, if soars.

It started with just the daytraders. Because the show airs at 6 pm and the "regular" market is closed, the "home gamers" who use daytrading software play the stocks in the after hours. By the time the stock opens the next day it can be up 50 cents or 3 bucks, depending on how hard he hyped it and of course whether it's traded on the NASDAQ because the daytraders like that best.

Some of these stocks immediately pull back after gapping the next day, and some of them simply soar higher. We saw this one Wednesday. On a Tuesday night he latched onto REDF, the Indian web portal company. He pushed it pretty hard. So, Tuesday afternoon REDF closed at 15.09. It opened Wednesday at 19.46 and soared to 21.40 in the first minutes of trading.

This is very reminiscent of something that was happening in 1999. There was a tech guru by the name of "Gilder" and he was actually very good at seeing what technologies worked and what didn't. But hot technology doesn't always mean hot companies. In any event, he'd talk positively about a company and the next day it would open up 10,20,50 points. It was nuts.

Now we have Cramer. He's the new Gilder. When he says buy, the sheep buy and up it goes. Is this the new paradigm? For now, yes. You can't ignore the power he's wielding right now. Granted it's upsetting a lot of people, especially the people who specialize in short sales. Nothing will ruin your day more than being short a stock that Cramer calls a "load the truck" on.

The point of this isn't to point out new and exciting stock ideas, nor to bash the guy or what have you. The point is that this guy moves stocks and we cannot ignore it. Personally, we feel it's bordering on "crooked" because they air him at a time when most people cannot react, but for now he's there and he's moving things. Keep an eye on this, because we think it's going to grow in popularity. Just remember however that at one point Gilder could move stocks 500%. By 2002 he was bankrupt and his subscriptions dried up.

Boating Insurance Ensures You Won't Lose Your Precise Investment

A boat is a luxurious and pleasurable piece of property, which many would love to have, but only a few can afford. Owning one is such a huge investment and for sure, you would not want to loose your investment. Protect yourself from losses coming from theft or damage on your boat, it is thus best to get a boating insurance to protect your precious investment.

Boating insurance is available from any insurance companies, however, to ensure your boat is properly secured, you need to get boating insurance from a reputable insurance company that specializes in boating insurance and other marine properties.

If you are able to save enough to buy a boat, you need to also be sure to save enough to acquire boating insurance to protect it from possible loss or damage.

There are boating insurances that will ensure you will be able to replace the boat if the manufacturer failed to deliver a useful and properly built boat, or in cases of theft or damaged caused by external factors.

Acquiring the boating insurance will provide you with peace of mind, and thus you will enjoy sailing and cruising onboard your boat without having to worry because you have a boating insurance to indemnify you in any case.

Sailing or cruising is not without any danger, and you will not be able to acquire a boating insurance that will ensure you will not suffer from accidents or possible damages. Boating insurance will only protect you from monetary losses in case of accident while onboard your boat or theft of your boat.

Boating insurance will also cover your boat against liability losses. Any damage to another boat or the boating dock and even for bodily injury or death to another person coming from the use of the boat is also covered by your boating insurance.

Boating insurance also covers people on board the vessel provided the person is not a crew of the vessel.

It may be worthy to mention at this time that the coverage of the boat against physical loss or damages needs to come from external causes. If somebody who works on the boat causes the damage, the boating insurance will need to establish that the damage is not intentional before it even considers the claim as valid.

As mentioned before, the insurance coverage for third party injuries may only affect those who are not crewmembers or employees of the boatyard.

If the injury happens to a crewmember, then the Federal Longshore and Harbor Worker's Compensation Act must apply.

The example of those people who get onboard that are not member of the crew would be mechanics, carpenters, painters, and most importantly, guests. They are protected from injury while boarding or getting off the boat.

Accidents and thieves may steal your precious boat from you; the boating insurance will protect you from this. Ensure that you understand the boating insurance policy.

This will ensure that you understand the liabilities and the coverage that will fit the need and the use of your vessel. Especially for those who use the vessel for their business, the boating insurance is necessary to protect your boat, your business and yourself as you conduct your activities aboard your boat.

In dealing with your boating insurance, do not miss reading the fine prints in the policy, this may be very important because the insurance company may put in there conditions that will ensure they will not pay your coverage. Scrutinize the contract a bit to ensure you will continue to enjoy the services of your boat.

Lighting for Boat Docks

Lighting your boat dock is important for the safety of you and your passengers when entering and exiting your vessel in the dark, and can also be a wonderful feature to have should you want to entertain on your boat dock after the sun has set. Boat dock lighting also ensures that yourself, or others do not unexpectedly end up in the water during the nighttime hours.

There are a variety of different boat dock lighting options available. What choice you make for your particular boat dock lighting has a lot to do with what you plan on doing on the boat dock, and how much money you are willing to spend to light it. You can light your boat dock very simply for a minimal amount of money. Or, you can light your boat dock much more elaborately should your budget be big enough.

A boat dock can be lit with a simple floodlight that is linked to your home's power and turned on when you depart for a trip, and simply turned off upon your return. Installing a simple flood light can solve your need to light the dock, at a minimal cost, and can ensure that your boat dock is a safe one late in the evening.

Those who plan on doing some entertaining, on their boat dock may want to opt for a more elaborate boat dock lighting plan than a simple flood light. Boaters who often go out at night in their boat may also want to opt for more elaborate and expensive lighting for their boat dock. This type of lighting usually comprised of several lights placed around the dock to ensure that every inch of the dock is visible.

Lighting your boat dock properly can help ensure that you can see the dock well when returning from a voyage, and don't damage your boat or the dock when you attempt to dock the boat upon your return. A dock that is not lit properly can lend to boats accidentally hitting a corner and damaging the boat or the dock.

Traditional boat dock lights are often more rugged in structure than traditional lights and are designed to be able to withstand the elements they might face while attached to a boat dock.

Boat dock lights can make your boat dock not only a safer but also a much more enjoyable place. Boat dock lights can make night swimming a possibility, and can allow yourself and guests to spend time on the deck well into the night without ever being in the dark.

Aluminum Boat Trailers Every Aluminum Boat Needs One

If you have an aluminum boat, then an aluminum boat trailer is what you need to haul it around, and get it to the fishing hole you love going to. Aluminum boats are great for fishing lakes, and ponds. You really would not want to take one into the ocean unless you have a larger one however. It just might not hold up against the waves, and you might be wishing you had not taken it out once you get it out in the water.

When you have an aluminum boat trailer for your aluminum boat, you have access to getting into the lakes where you could not get in to go fishing at before. This makes fishing so much more fun, and easy. Back that trailer up to the water and push your boat off the trailer with an easy push. You will wonder how you ever fished without a trailer, and will be glad of the investment that you made.

Sometimes when you buy an aluminum boat, you can get a great deal on an aluminum boat trailer if you buy at the sale time. This is a great deal if you save enough money to make both purchases worth your while, and what good is a boat if you don't have a trailer. You can not go fishing alone if you do not own a trailer for your boat. How will you get the boat into the water alone without a friend helping you? You will not.

You will find that an aluminum boat trailer can vary in price ranges. Remember that you get what you pay for, and that you should buy the best that you can afford. Besides, if you have a good boat, you want a good trailer to pull it on. Otherwise, what is the point? Always buy the best that you can in a trailer, as well anything that has to do with the trailer. You will see that your boat trailer will last for ages, and you will be glad that you bought a good one in the long run.

One important thing that you need to remember when you go to buy your trailer for your aluminum boat. You will need to know how large the boat is, and what brand name it is for the best fit on a trailer. The length measurement will come in handy, and you will be glad you took this information along with you.

Brent has been a car salesman for more than 30 years and has recommended and helped his clients to finding the right automobiles and trailers for their needs. Go to http://www.trail-r.com for more information on topics such as boat trailers for sale.

Fishing Boats Docks

When I was a kid, a way long time ago, there was this old man who fished Buckeye Lake and caught more bass than anyone I knew at the time. His bass fishing technique was to fish boat docks. His lures were all beat up, most of them missing paint and some were even bare wood from hitting them on the docks so many times. His bass fishing tip to me was to fish boat docks and to fish them thoroughly.

Boat docks produce shade and bass feel secure in low light areas. Docks also provide a place for bass to ambush their prey. Sometimes when you see rod holders and lights at a dock there’s a chance there’s some kind of structure there too. Maybe a brushpile or rocks that the owner has produced. Use your trolling motor to get close to the dock or just drift up to it and flip or pitch your lure.

Some good lures for fishing for bass at boat docks are a jig, worm, crankbait and spinnerbait. Of course, you want to throw as far back under the dock as you can but make sure on the retrieve that the lure bumps the dock’s post as it goes by them. The erratic behavior of the lure sometimes produces a strike. If you’re using a crankbait, you can bend the eye and make it run under the dock or use a coffin-bill lure. While the lure doesn't run true it does get farther under the boat dock where the bass are.

Boat docks are one of my favorite places to bass fish and apparently the bass like them too.

Charles E. White has fished for bass for over 50 years. In that amount of time he has caught more than 6,000 bass with his biggest one weighing in at 12 pounds 14 ounces. The most he has caught was 76 bass in 3 hours at a lake he has fished many times. Nothing like that ever happened before or since at that lake.

I Travelled 12 Hours Overnight, By Sea, In A Leaky Boat - From Cameroon To Nigeria - Without Money!

Deciding To Travel To Cameroon

It all began in June 1999 after I completed my 3 months intensive French language study program in a language school in Benin City. I realized that even though I was already fairly comfortable reading and writing French, I had not achieved the level of fluency in speech that I desired. For instance, I still struggled to respond easily to simple questions or carry on conversation for short periods without having to pause and interject some “eems and hmms”!

So, I told my teacher I wanted to travel to any French speaking country and spend part of my annual leave there to develop my fluency. After some deliberation he decided that even though Cote D’Ivoire would have been the preferable place to go, he would (for cost considerations) send me to stay with his family in Cameroon(Yes, my tutor is Cameroonian). That way, following his instructions in a letter to them through me, his brother and sisters would help me gain exposure to numerous opportunities to practise speaking French.

I went to Cameroon by road (via 2 border towns: Ikom in Nigeria and Ekok in Cameroon) for two reasons. First, that was the only way my N12, 500.00(about $125 US Dollars left over from my annual leave allowance) would have been adequate for the trip (I was told an air return ticket cost N30, 000.00 - $300 USD - at the time). Secondly, it afforded me the opportunity to mix with French-speaking people as soon as I crossed the border.

Being able to listen to the natives speak French to themselves; having gendarmes ask me for my passport and visa in French (it was not often that I ran into one that could speak English!) served to help me consolidate my learning quicker. Using the money I saved from going by road, I was able to buy a lot of novels and magazines published in French – including those written by authors well known to us out here for their works e.g. James Hadley Chase, Agatha Christie etc. – which I read through regularly while there, and brought back to Nigeria for continued use in my studies.

Trying To Return To Nigeria - The Drama Begins!

But back to my traumatic homecoming experience. Let me give you some idea of what it was like. That July morning in Douala, I had asked my friend for the money he promised to give back to me, and he told me he had asked his boss for a salary advance. He left for work saying I should call him by 9.00am so he could give me directions to pass through his office and pick up the money on my way. At some minutes past 9.00am I called him. To my dismay, he told me he could not get the money and began apologizing profusely, pleading that I set off on my journey without it!

I was stunned nearly beyond words. Recovering myself some, I told him(in as much of a dignified tone as I could manage!) how disappointed I was that he had put me in such dire straits knowing it was my first visit to the country(to which I got even more profuse apologies). I hung up the phone in disgust, and did some quick and very hard thinking.

One thing was very clear in my mind. I had to return to Guinness Benin brewery(in Edo State, Nigeria) to resume afternoon shift latest by 2.00pm the next day. I had exhausted the remaining days of my leave waiting for my friend to come up with my money. It was about 10.00am in the morning. I took a bike in to the city center and made enquiries about alternative routes for travelling to Nigeria cheaply.

I recalled from meeting some Nigerian traders who lived in the city, that they had mentioned a small port where traders from Nigeria frequently entered Douala with goods and agricultural produce to sell. Eventually someone gave me directions on how to get transportation to the place called “Idinao” port. The journey was not smooth for me as various checkpoints meant I had to face repeat questioning from gendarmes. On occasions when passengers were asked to pay one fee or the other, since I did not have more than a few CFA left, I tended to get more than a little harassment from the officers.

Rescued By A "Guardian Angel"

Towards the end of the journey, at the last checkpoint, I was rescued from a particularly aggressive gendarme, who after sighting my passport queried my intentions for wishing to exit the country via Idinao port. A gentleman who had quietly observed me go through the problems from the start of the journey, and who was obviously fairly well known as a trader in Douala, spoke up on my behalf, saying I was his younger brother(he was a Nigerian) who had come to visit him, and that he was taking me back to Nigeria! I was more than grateful and told him so. Yet, at the same time I was surprised that this man had made such a gesture to a person he did not know. But as I was to discover later, he was not even started yet!

After we got down at the port, he told me his name was “Sugarr” (a nickname, and that’s exactly what he wrote in my diary). His accent revealed he was of the Igbo tribe(I am Yoruba). He asked me where I was headed, and I told him Benin City. Then he explained that boats from Idinao would arrive in Oron in twelve hours, after which I would have to travel a few more hours to get to Aba, and then Benin. He then took me to the owner of one of the large, but aged boats who was his personal friend. The boat owner – known as “Delta”(another nickname) - agreed to let me board with the few CFA I had left as payment following pleas by Sugarr – and also after I desperately offered him my Olympus Stylus camera to complete the payment!

Help! Me? Travel In A Leaky, Rickety Old Boat For 12 Hours Under Heavy Rainfall?

It was only after he said yes, that I took a good look at the boat I was to travel in along with many other people – and their countless bags of produce. The large boat creaked repeatedly as the waves of the Atlantic Ocean beat against its sides, and I could see that water was collecting in the bottom suggesting it was leaking! I had never been on the sea before and what was worse, the radio carried by someone close by had just announced that many Nigerians died in a boat destined for Oron some days earlier!!

A few of the intending passengers next to me were talking excitedly about people they knew who had been on that boat. I began to get really scared, but the thought of not arriving on time to resume duties when I was supposed to(I never took my work lightly, and always wanted to do what was expected of me at all times), kept me from changing my mind. I picked up my bags and entered into the boat. The drizzle of the rain soon turned into a downpour and I had to use few extra coins I found in my pockets to buy one of the big nylon bags people were using as modified raincoats(by cutting crude holes at the bottom and sides for the head and arms to pass through).

We had to wait from about 4.00pm till 7.00pm before the journey could begin. I had taken no food since waking up, and I had no money to buy anything to eat.

Yet, all I could think of was getting back to Benin City in time to take over from the morning duty brewer. I was resolute. As far as being scared of the boat capsizing on the sea was concerned, I quickly dispensed with any excuses not to continue, when I saw about five elderly women traders settle into the lower part of the boat, with their bags of produce next to them, and simply fall asleep! “If they are not worried, then I certainly should not be!” I told myself.

The Journey Back Home Begins

We traveled under heavy rainfall in Delta’s large rickety old motor boat for over 12 hours through the night (from 7.00pm till 7.30am). During the first four hours of the journey, I experienced for the first time what I had read about in books on Sea travel: Sea Sickness. I became dizzy and felt like throwing up many times. Fortunately, after a while, my body seemed to adjust to the rhythm of the boat on the sea, and I subsequently overcame it.

During the “voyage” we ran into about 5 different water checkpoints manned by Gendarmes, Police, Customs, Navy and Drugs Law Enforcement respectively. Many times some “water rate” or fee was required to be paid by passengers, and as you can imagine, since I had no money, I always got special attention – including some heavy slaps. On one occasion my friend Sugarr tried to intervene as he had done in the taxi, but this time earned himself a dirty slap for his efforts.

At about 7.30am the boat pulled to shore at Oron. After we got our passports stamped at the Customs post, Sugarr asked me how I intended to move. Unable to think of anything better, I offered him my camera in exchange for whatever it would cost to take transportation to Benin City. He declined and instead paid my fare to Aba, where he then took me to his wife’s shop and gave me money to continue my journey to Benin City. I took his address in my diary, thanked him profusely and proceeded to the car park he had described.

I Resume Work, On Schedule, In Guinness Benin!

A few hours later I was in Benin City. Before it was 2pm the same day, I resumed work as Duty Brewer on the afternoon shift, and none of those I spoke to or met at work could have told(from looking at me) that I had just completed an overnight sixteen (16) hour journey across the Atlantic Ocean from Cameroon to Benin City, in Nigeria. Even I could not believe it for a long time after that. Among other things, I kept wondering how it was that Sugarr had appeared at the exact moment when I most needed help to achieve my purpose.

Two years, later, in 2001, I would return to Cameroon(on company duty), but despite my efforts, was unable to locate Sugarr.

Up till today, I have not been able to find him. Yet, I will never forget the wonderful role he played in helping me achieve my purpose. Napoleon Hill in his book “Think and Grow Rich” said, when your magnificent obsession fully takes you over, you will find that people and events will begin to come together in a manner that will eventually help you achieve it. I believe that’s exactly what happened when I focused my mind on getting back to Benin at that definite time so I could resume work as scheduled.

From the day I had that experience, I became convinced that Hill was right when he wrote that “whatever the human mind can conceive, that it can achieve”.

But You Might Ask: How Did My Learning To Speak French "The Hard Way" Help Me In My Career?

My answer is that not only did it help me a lot in my career, but it also opened up many opportunities for me outside the workplace – new friends etc. For instance, in April 2001(almost 2 years later), I was selected along with three senior managers – from amongst fourteen who attended the pilot course in Sheraton Hotel, Lagos - to attend a 1 week International Coaching Conversations Facilitators’ Course in Douala, Cameroon (note that the company and most of the managers had no idea at this time that I could speak, read and write French).

Read my article titled Achieving YOUR Goals IN SPITE OF Adversity - Two Short But True Stories That Tell HOW to learn how my ability to speak French helped me get noticed by senior colleagues(including the expatriate Managing Director of Guinness Cameroon), even as I gained the admiration and respect/friendship of others with whom I attended the course.

Choosing The Right Knife For Your Outdoor Sport

There are many different types of knives available, and as with many other tools, if you don't have the right one, it's likely to cause problems. Here are a few tips for choosing the right knife for your outdoor sport.

Hunting

Most hunting knives are designed for skinning. If you want your knife to be good for skinning, the main thing you should pay attention to is the blade shape. You want a rounded or drop point so that when you are “ripping” the skin, the point of your knife will not dig into the meat.

Also, you'll probably want a fixed blade knife, as folding blades have to many crevices to trap blood and mess in.

Camping

Choosing a knife for camping can be tough, because you need a versatile knife. For this reason, you'll often find that a swiss army knife or multi tool may fill your needs best. Also, you may want to add a saw, hatchet, or machete to your pack before you leave, for tougher cutting jobs.

Fishing

You should probably get a fillet knife for fishing. A fillet knife is well designed for cleaning fish, and it can also cut fishing line well, which is the other main task for a fishing knife. If you plan on fishing in salt water, be sure your knife is designed to withstand the corrosion of saltwater.

Trapping

Trappers will generally want a a skinning knife, much like a hunting knife. Tougher tasks are normally done with an axe, so a second knife isn't normally necessary.

Boating

A boaters main need for a knife is cutting line. You'll need a sharp knife, that is easily accesible and quickly deployed, in case you need to cut a line in a hurry. Be sure that the knife will stand up to wet conditions, too.

Kayaking Facts

Kayaking is the process by which a kayak will be used to move through rivers or lakes. The kayak is a small boat that must be powered by a human. It will have a deck which is covered, and it will also feature a cockpit that is covered as well. A special paddle is used to push it forward, and this boat was first invented by the Inuit and Aleut hunters in the colder regions of North America. A contemporary kayak can come in a wide variety of different styles, and kayaking is a sport which is enjoyed by many people. Research has indicated that the kayak has existed for at least 4,000 years.

Some kayaks can hold a maximum of three people, but they will commonly only seat one or two people. The person will sit in the cockpit facing forward, and the spray skirt will stop water from getting into the craft. While the Aleut or Inuit males would design kayaks to be used for hunting, some kayaks were specifically designed for women. Generally, a kayak will be about 17 fee long, and could be 22 inches wide and 7 inches deep. In the early models, the kayak could almost be compared to an additional layer of clothing. Kayaks are commonly used today by people who practice kayaking.

Kayaking is the process of paddling a kayak on water that is moving. While some people consider it to be a sport, others do it for mere recreation. There are multiple forms of kayaking, and the two most common are Sea kayaking and Whitewater kayaking. While traditional kayaks were made from wood and animal skins, most kayaks today are made from materials such as kevlar or fiberglass. Some people will challenge fast moving rivers by using a kayak to move through certain sections of a river. These trips may last a single day, or could last multiple days. Whitewater Racing is a professional competition in which racers will attempt to use kayaks to outrace each other.

The term creeking is used to describe kayaking in difficult rivers. People who practice creeking can expect to run into slides, waterfalls, and ledges. Slalom is another form of kayaking in which racers will try to get to the bottom of the specific part of a river. Not only must they move quickly, they must also move around gates, and these are poles that have been set up at certain points in the river. Most Slalom races will have over 20 gates on a single course, and they must be properly navigated. Playboating is another variation which places an emphasis on the artistic side of kayaking instead of the speed.

With this style, the participants will generally remain in one portion of the river, and will seek to move from one point to another. However, they will need to work against the power of the river in order to achieve this. Kayaking is a sport that is popular in places that have strong river. However, it can be dangerous, and some participants have died in the most difficult rivers.

Michael Colucci is a writer for Kayaking which is part of the Knowledge Search network.

Buying a Houseboat

You have finally decided that you need a houseboat at all cost. So you begin your search for one either within your locality, on the web or by browsing through the newspapers.

Before you venture out to even ask for the price of a craft, ther e are some few things you should consider first.

Do you want a new boat or a used one? Your budget and desire to carry out additional repairs or reconditionining will determine your answer to this question.

Are you seeking to buy a 10-seater or a 20-seater craft? After an assessment of your needs, you can decide whether you need a personal craft or a family type which can carry the entire household on a trip.

Are you buying though a broker or making the purchase yourself? If you are not familiar with the practicalities and technicalities of sea going vessels, then you better contact a broker.

Where are you going to moor the boat ? Remember you can only moor the craft at canals, lakes, rivers or the sea. Each craft has been built for a specific water body and you may need to factor this into your purchase.

After you have decided on all these, you will now have to go out to find out the boat of your dreams.

You can find excellent boats for sale at www.boats-for-sale.com.

Alternatively, you can visit boatyards and speak to the repair workers there. They may know someone offering his boat for sale. You can even find notices on some houseboats offering them for sale.

Visiting boat brokerage companies can also lead to a good purchase. These companies maintain a list of offers and can advise on what will be a good sale.

You may also contact brokers who are well-versed in these jobs and can do the negotiation and inspection on your behalf so you get a good bargain and a better buy.

The greatest risk that comes with purchase of houseboats arises when you are buying used ones. Unlike a car which when troublesome you ca park along the highway and walk home, if you buya faulty boat and there is leakage, you may not find anywhere updteam to stand and call for help. It is therefore essential that you do a thorough check on used houseboats before you make a purchase.
Look at the hull and see it it has undergone sandblastiing and painting as these will protect it against damage.
If the hull is aluminium, is it intact or if it is fiberglass, is it fractured?
If you are buying a pontoon, check for cracks on board as that is their greatest vulnerability. You can use a hammer to knock the floor to detect weakspots.
Inspect the engines for oil leakages, cracks and loose fittings.
So now you now know how to find a houseboat to enjoy your vacation.
